Our skin is our largest organ and it is protected by a fragile hydrolipid or oily film that functions as a protective barrier from the external aggressive agents. The film shields the skin from potentially harmful agents that are attacking it on a daily basis.

The genital area is also protected!  The vulvar lips or vulva has a superficial layer that is covered by the acidic hydrolipidic film which has all the same properties as the skin – it is a natural protection barrier. This protective layer is composed of a mixture of sweat, sebum and lipids. The protective film may change and is dependent on a variety of factors such as time of the day, time of the year (season), dietary intake, chronic or acute illness, hormones, medications and external stressors. The coating is a liquidy and waxy substance that is combined with oils that are manufactured by the body’s gland. These glands secrete an oily or waxy matter, also known as sebum, which lubricates, waterproofs and protects.

Just as one protects and nurtures the skin on our face and bodies, many women need to understand how to maintain an intact hydrolipid barrier on genital skin for defense against pathogens and personal soothing comfort. This filmy barrier shields and retains moisture in the pelvic area and may act as a barrier against both bacteria, viruses, fungus, toxins or irritants.

This protective genital skin barrier can be damaged from so many external agents, most importantly including aggressive cleansing products. Over-the-counter soaps strip away the body’s natural barrier. The most important component of the hydrolipid layer is water, which adds to the suppleness and smoothness of the skin.

Once the skin barrier is weakened, especially when washing the genitals with harsh sudsy soaps, a woman may experience symptoms such as burning, itchiness and soreness or dryness. Without this natural barrier, the vulvar area may even become red, flakey, cracked and inflamed.

In order to prevent damage and maintain a smooth, supple and protected filmy barrier, it must be nourished by similar elements such as hyaluronic acid and other soothing oils. Lubrigyn products help the genital area maintain its integrity, elasticity and moisture. These products cleanse with oils and maintain the skins natural protective and defensive barrier.

It is essential that women begin to understand the importance of skin health and understand how the hygiene products that they are choosing impact their body and genitals. Choose carefully to preserve your natural protective barrier and maintain supple, soft and clean tissues.
