A sense of humor is good when it’s dry, a martini is good when it’s dry, and then there’s that nice fluffy towel that’s been hanging on a clothesline on a sunny spring day. But dryness down in your vaginal area is NOT a good thing. And when it’s accompanied by uncomfortable burning and itchiness, well…I think you understand.
I’ve done my research, and know that postmenopausal women my age (and even premenopausal women) experience vaginal dryness due to our decreasing levels of estrogen. How ironic that so many of us gain weight over much of our bodies when we go through these ‘normal’ phases of a woman’s life, but our vaginal lining gets thinner! And that’s the area we really need to be “plump.”
As disheartening as it was to learn, “atrophic vaginitis”–the medical term– is pretty much a fact of life. As a matter of fact, over 14 million women over 18 years old have it. What I didn’t know was that I could be exacerbating the dryness simply by taking my everyday shower. I love scrub-a-dubbing, but had no idea that the soaps and body washes I used were actually making the problem worse by stripping away a healthy film that helps protect that very delicate area.
I wasn’t comfortable talking about this subject with anyone, including my doctor, but when the dryness and burning became issues during times of intimacy, I knew something had to be done. The problem had become medical AND was causing me stress and affecting my marriage.
More research told me about the products that can reportedly help treat my vaginal dryness, including vaginal creams and gels, vaginal tablets inserted directly into the vagina, and even a vaginal ring that’s placed in the vagina for three-month stretches. I wasn’t keen, however, to use something that could have side effects, and I think gels and creams are messy. Then I learned about Lubrigyn Lotion, the pot of gold at the end of my search! Made in Italy (already I liked it), it moisturizes, cleans, protects, and deodorizes the vaginal area, without destroying its “integrity.” Basically, Lubrigyn Lotion provides help for our sensitive private parts, and is gentle enough to use every day.
By the way, doctors say that having more sex will protect against vaginal dryness. But if you’re tempted to scream “fire!” every time you attempt intercourse, it’s the last thing on your mind. Giving your private parts the moisture they need will put you back on the road to satisfaction.
